My Big Fat Greek Adventure: "
We have always wanted to go to Greece, unfortunately, we can’t go everywhere in the world (although we are trying our best). That is why we love guest articles. Even though we travel a lot, there are many places that we don’t know anything about. After looking at the photos and reading this post, Greece has moved up to the top of our list of places to visit.
Enjoy this Overview of This to do in Crete
With an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean.
White sandy beaches that look out over the clear blue seas of the Mediterranean make the island one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
Beyond the beaches, its spine of impressive mountains — the highest Psiloritis, is 2,456 metres high and snow capped during winter, the southwest is barren and impenetrably rocky, while the east and south are both fertile.
When to go
The most popular time to take cheap holidays to Crete is in the summer. The tourist season starts with Easter and lasts until October when the temperatures range is from twenty to thirty degrees.
Beach life
Almost everyone that visits Crete during the summer months will be there for the beaches. On such a large island, there are indeed plenty to choose from and with so many within driving distance there’s no need to stay at the same beach for the duration of your trip.
There really are too many beaches to list but should you be hoping to strut your stuff with a younger crowd make your way to Malia Beach, the Hersonissos Beaches or Hani Kokkini Beach. Families may want to head to Golden Beach, Almyrida Beach, or Agia Galini Beach, while secluded beaches and secrets coves can be found at Kyani Akti Beach, Bali Beach and on Tsoutsouros Beach.
Still not beaches are not all packed. The far west has remote, empty sands and the south coast has small resorts often reached by spectacular road journey or sometimes by boat.
Knossos
The extraordinary Minoan civilization, which flourished on Crete from 2800 until 1450, was followed by a succession of great powers including Greece, Rome, Byzantium, Venice, and the Ottoman Empire.
Today the islands’ archaeological and architectural heritage sums up its history. The ruins of Knossos are just one of many sites that revealed important archeological finds as well as Phaistos and Gortys, all which draw in the tens of thousands of visitors each year.
That’s not forgetting the many villas, towns, churches, forts mosques, ghost villages ancient harbors and cities with old quarters each with fascinating stories and histories.
Rethymno
Rethymno is Crete’s third-largest town and one of the most picturesque, with a charming harbor and massive Venetian fortress. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, small Venetian harbor and narrow streets. An added bonus to Rethymno is that the beach is part of the town.
