Café Tartine is a classic Parisian styled café on Soi Ruam Rudee, just behind the newly built Novotel hotel. This is not some snooty French restaurant. Rather, this is a ‘real’ casual café, where you can grab a quick light meal or snack. Café Tartine also distinguishes itself by being open for breakfast as well as lunch. You could even grab an early dinner here, but they do close at 8:00 pm most days.
The restaurant is very bright, with light colored woods and white walls. There is ample seating both inside and outside on the wide deck between the building and the street. There is a large supply of newspapers and magazines on hand if you’re alone and want something to read. The menu is definitely light, with salads, sandwiches, quiche and other light foods. There’s a nice selection of drinks, which naturally includes Orangina, Evian and Perrier.
"Poulet Chèvre" – Chicken, goat cheese & black olive sandwich at Café Tartine
While the turkey sandwich sounded good when I looked at the menu on-line, it was the poulet chèvre that caught my eye when I got there. The chicken, goat cheese and black olive combination sounded ‘different’. Served on a crispy-crusted baguette, it was quite tasty. The small salad accompanying the sandwich was also good, with a tart honey mustard dressing.
Custard filled pumpkin – a French take on a traditional Thai dessert – at Café Tartine
The light sandwich left a little room for dessert, and the custard filled pumpkin sounded interesting. This is similar to a traditional Thai sweet, only instead of the Thai custard made with coconut cream and palm sugar, Café Tartine’s version is filled with a heavy French custard similar to a crème brul&eactue;e. The pumpkin was served covered with a sweet cream sauce and caramel syrup. The sweet cream helped counter the heavy custard. Unlike a typical Thai dessert, this was quite heavy. I should have ordered coffee.
Café Tartine was a very nice place to have a light lunch. The menu is definitely ‘different’ and while some have described the ingredients as ‘nothing special’ I think the café does a good job for the price. You can view a complete menu along with current operating hours at the Café Tartine web site.
