Dalad is a small Vietnamese caf&eactue; on Soi Aree off Pahonyothin Road. The bright white interior is comfortable and together with the mirrors makes it look bigger than it is. The small menu offers all the typical dishes found in Thai Vietnamese restaurants. A lot of the Vietnamese food popular in Thailand are items I’ve never seen in Vietnam, but then I haven’t been to Vietnam as often as I might like. Dalad’s menu also highlights the dishes that can be made vegetarian.
Fresh Spring Rolls from Dalad
For my late lunch I decide to try the minced pork and lemongrass omelet, as well as the fresh spring rolls. Uncooked Vietnamese spring rolls are one of my favorite foods. It’s the special kind basil, which in Thai is called horopa. It has a very distinctive taste, heavy with anise. Fresh spring rolls always have lots of fresh horopa, along with lettuce, carrots and maybe some meat, wrapped in a light rice flour dough sheet. It’s a hard dish to mess up, and Dalad’s version is quite good.
The omelet was served over steamed rice. It looked quite small, but with the spring rolls it was a big lunch for me. Minced pork omelets are a common feature of Thai food, but Dalad adds a bit of lemongrass that gives it a distinctive taste.
I also tried the iced coffee. They don’t use Vietnamese coffee, which isn’t easy to get in Thailand, so the taste of that wasn’t ‘authentic’ but it was good.
Dalad is open daily from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. Expect to pay around 250 Baht per person for a meal here. The restaurant is located on Soi Aree, off Pahonyothin Road, where there is a Skytrain station at the mouth of the Soi.
