Ohana Cafe – Bangkok

Ohana Cafe – Bangkok: "

I noticed Ohana when I was heading to Li-Bra-Ry and made a mental note to check it out for lunch one day. The café is right on Sukhumvit Soi 24. It’s a very long narrow space, but the restaurant is well signed on the street, so it’s easy to find.

Ohana Cafe entry. The entry is small, but there’s a larger area in back.

The front part of the café can best be described as a sort of greenhouse, a glass enclosure built against the neighboring shophouse. At the back part is a separately enclosed area with the counter for take-out orders and more air conditioned seating.

The menu at Ohana offers light meals, with a rather nice array of sandwiches as well as salads, soups and even some pancakes. On the drinks side, there are a number of coffee options, as well as teas, juices and soft drinks. For my late lunch, I decided on the Salami and Provolone sandwich, with the iced espresso latte to drink.

The sandwich was shown in the menu as a panini, but it was served on a baguette instead. Although it wasn’t what I expected, it was still good. I wouldn’t call it an outstanding sandwich, but it was good enough to make me want to return and try one of the other options.

The iced coffee was definitely unique, and is what will definitely bring me back for another taste. The espresso was served in a medium sized heavy glass with a heavy layer of milk foam and some dark ‘chunks’ I eventually figured out were ice cubs made from strong espresso. The coffee was accompanied by a large pitcher of cold milk and a small one of sugar syrup. You added the cold milk to the glass as you drank up the coffee. It was very different to the iced coffee you normally get in Thailand, and very good.

Ohana isn’t cheap, but it’s not too pricey either. A sandwich and coffee will set you back 300 to 400 Baht. The café is open every day from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. It’s about a five minute walk down Sukhumvit 24 from the Phrom Pong Skytrain Station. There’s a map on the under construction Ohana web site.
