"V8" is a new entry on the Bangkok restaurant scene, and the first attempt at an American ‘diner’ that I can think of. Just opened in November 2010, V8 is located in Sukhumvit Plaza, next to the Times Square building a short way from the Asoke Skytrain station.
The memorabilia filled interior of V8
The restaurant’s decor is definitely a good effort at reproducing the 1950′s diner style, with big brightly colored booths, checkerboard tiles and even a jukebox. There’s also a lot of memorabilia, including an old-style Coca Cola vending machine, vinyl records and photographs.
Of course, what makes any place a true diner is the menu, and V8 comes through with a good selection of dishes like Reuben sandwiches, fried steaks and of course, burgers. They even try to stock American soft drinks you can’t easily get in Thailand, like Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew, although these seem to sell out quickly.
Chicken Fried Steak with white gravy and mashed potatoes, from V8
With so many options, it took a while to decide what to order. While the sandwiches and burgers looked interesting, I decided to go for something that you won’t easily find anywhere else in Bangkok: Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes.
The steak was large, as you can probably see in the photo. The coating was very crispy, while the chicken itself was still tender, if perhaps a little dry. In fact, the steak was not greasy at all. The white gravy was a bit bland, as they will be, but V8′s had a generous portion of chopped bacon (mmm…bacon) added, which of course fixes everything. The mashed potatoes were instant, I suspect, but they were still rather good. On the whole, it was a filling and satisfying dose of what amounts to ‘comfort food’ for some Americans.
V8 is not too expensive as Bangkok restaurants selling "foreign" food go. Expect to pay around 300 to 400 Baht for a meal. The restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner. You can visit the V8 Diner web site for more information (maybe, it was "under construction" at last check).
